The Library

During a long initial period the Municipal Library Camilo Castelo Branco was located in the present House of Culture, in Rua Direita, later it was transferred to the basement of the building of the Paços do Concelho. On June 1, 1992, it took on a major role as an engine for the development of artistic activities in the county, with the inauguration of its headquarters building, built from scratch, following the "BM2" typology established by the National Public Reading Network, implanted in a harmonious way in the Park of Sinçães.
Occupying a total area of almost 3,000 m2, the Municipal Library has spaces and programs adapted to the different age levels and to the various types and supports of reading and information.

Férias Desportivas

For the youngest school holidays are themselves synonymous with leisure, pleasure and joy. But in Vila Nova de Famalicão the school holidays are much more than that, they are sporting and recreational, they are physical and cultural enrichment, knowledge and much animation.
Every year, during the school holidays of Christmas and Easter, the City Council, through the Department of Sport, provides Sports Holidays, an initiative aimed at all children who attend the first cycle of basic education in the county, and that intends to occupy in a healthy and amusing way this period of school pause.

These days are full of surprises and sports activities. Between the municipal pavilion and the swimming pools, children practice various modalities like basketball, volleyball, handball, soccer and swimming, but traditional games and dance are also present.
All the activities are supervised by municipal Physical Education technicians who closely follow all the games and support the young ones in the learning of new sports, providing a greater sports enrichment.

Historical-Cultural Heritage

Rooted in knowledge and culture, Vila Nova de Famalicão is also the land of writer Camilo Castelo Branco. It was in S. Miguel de Seide that the novelist wrote some of the most beautiful pages of Portuguese literature and that is where his memoirs are kept in the house-museum of Camilo, a pole of reference for Portuguese culture.
But Famalicão is also a land of the present and, above all, of the future, standing out for the dynamism of its cultural policy, namely through the contemporary programming of Casa das Artes.
Thus, Famalicão takes on Culture as a tourist attraction.
But it also bets on the preservation and valorisation of the historical and cultural heritage, which, besides Casa de Camilo, are examples the Surrealism Studies Center, the Bernardino Machado Museum, the Textile Industry Museum and the Lousado Railway Museum.
The patrimonial wealth of Vila Nova de Famalicão is also revealed through the rare and beautiful examples of Romanesque art, of which the churches of Santa Eulália of the Monastery of Arnoso, church of the Monastery of Landim and church of S. Tiago de Antas are the maximum exponent.
The built heritage of Famalicão is not limited, however here. There are several vestiges of the occupation of the region, in prehistory and antiquity. From the time of the copper we can emphasize the mammo of Vermoim. From the Iron Age, the castros of Penices, in Gondifelos, Santa Tecla, Oliveira S. Mateus, and the Hermitages in Jesufrei. From the Roman occupation there are several milestones the Villa Romana in Perrelos, among others.

Carta Educativa

We define the Education Charter of the Municipality of Vila Nova de Famalicão As a working tool for the reorganization of the school / education network and combines a diversity of information, in order to allow a reliable picture of the reality of the municipality, namely at the level of the educational system, thus constituting, and once again, a starting point for the joint reflection of local partners, within the framework of the Municipal Council of Education.
According to Decree-Law no. 7/2003, of January 15, the principles that should guide the preparation of the Education Charter are:
  • “The Education Charter aims to ensure the adequacy of the network of pre-school and primary and secondary education establishments, so that, at any time, educational offers available at the municipal level, respond to the effective demand that at that same level manifest themselves.
  • The Education Charter is, necessarily, the reflection, at the municipal level, of the process of national reorganization of the network of offers of education and training, with view to ensure rationalization and complementarity of these offers and their qualitative development, in a context of administrative decentralization, reinforcement of the management models of public education and educational establishments and their respective groupings and educational projects in schools.
  • The Charter of Education should promote the development of the process of grouping schools with a view to creating, in these conditions, more favorable conditions for the development of centers of excellence and educational competences, as well as the conditions for the efficient and effective management of the available educational resources.
  • The Educational Charter should include a prospective analysis, establishing progressive planning objectives in the medium and long term.
  • The Education Charter should guarantee the coherence of the educational network with the urban policy of the municipality”.
These principles were present, in a systematic and permanent way, throughout the process of elaboration of the Education Charter of Vila Nova de Famalicão.
The proposals for reorganizing the school network are set out in the Education Charter, approved on May 29, 2007, and are based on principles of national educational policy, in a link between the Regional Education Directorate's guidelines and the local needs, extended to the different levels of education. In the short and medium term.
